FAQ

Network-attached storage (NAS) is a dedicated file storage solution that connects to a local area network (LAN), allowing multiple users and devices to access and share files seamlessly. It combines hardware and software with protocols like NFS, SMB, or AFP to enable centralized file sharing. NAS devices, which can be scaled up by adding more storage drives, often support redundant storage configurations like RAID for data integrity. Managed through a browser-based utility, NAS systems provide fast, secure, and reliable storage services, making them ideal for both home and enterprise environments where efficient file sharing and data management are crucial. Read more: What is NAS Storage?

NAS devices connect to your network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi, creating a local area network (LAN). They use file-sharing protocols like NFS and SMB/CIFS to allow multiple users to access stored data simultaneously. See more: How Does NAS Work?

RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is a technology that combines multiple drives for improved performance and data protection. It's crucial for ensuring data redundancy in NAS systems.

NAS-specific hard drives, such as WD Red or Seagate IronWolf, are recommended for their reliability and performance in always-on, multi-user environments. For more, check out: What Drives Should I Use for a NAS?

NAS storage devices come in various capacities, typically ranging from a few terabytes to hundreds of terabytes, depending on the model and number of drive bays. For example, the UGREEN NAS series offers storage capacities such as 76TB, 136TB, 196TB, and 256TB.

Yes, you can access your NAS storage remotely through several methods, each with different levels of security and ease of use:

VPNs

Most secure method using either built-in NAS VPN services or router VPN capabilities.

  • Pros: Highest security level
  • Cons: More complex setup

Port Forwarding

Direct connection method that requires router configuration.

  • Pros: Fastest connection speeds
  • Cons: Requires technical knowledge, potentially less secure if not properly configured

The best method depends on your needs: choose VPN for security, or port forwarding for speed.

Well polished OS apps makes this a great choice for all users.

This is the second Ugreen NAS that I have, and I have to say I have been impressed with both. For context, I have 2 Qnap, one synology, an old PC running TrueNAS, and this is replacing a Terramaster that wouldn't boot anymore. Having used each of these for a very long time, I have to say that the Ugreen software is MUCH more user friendly, making it a solid choice for beginners. While other NAS devices connect via a browser tab, the Ugreen software is your portal to connect to the device. While the DH4300 isn't going to be a powerhouse like some other's, it's fantastic for those just entering into the NAS space.
The Rockchip isn't exceptionally fast, but it's good enough to host a local media library, photos, and general backup. You can create an automatic backup of both your PC or Mack, and even another Ugreen NAS, which is great for content creators.
The RAM is decent enough to run the programs on the NAS and even with running anti-virus and the AI photo at the same time I didn't experience any hiccups or slowdowns.
This NAS really isn't about the hardware for me, it's all about the software, the user experience is really well suited for people of all levels. The mobile app looks fantastic and is simple to use, and for those worried about security you can setup 2FA and use an app of your choice.

Great home NAS

Do you have a lot of photos, movies and other irreplaceable files you need to back up?
Most people do not do backups well, or they trust online backups exclusively.
This adds another tool to your arsenal - LOCAL storage that is RELIABLE!
This home NAS works well because it keeps your data local, but protected with RAID so that if a hard drive dies, your data doesn't die with it!
Very fast and very reliable.
A definite would buy.

Worth it and very nice ugreen makes excellent devices.

All things in live should be as straight forward as setting up this nas was, easy to use install drives format, take the time to move over all the data and bam it is good, great features, really like the user interface super simplistic installing apps like jellyfin was simple enough and just worked out the box. Much more feature filled than my las nas that was just basic network storage. I can watch my videos or upload files from anywhere back to my house and much more secure than using paid for cloud storage.

Amazing NAS solution for home/media.

I added 43TB disks to the NAS. Theyre not fancy, but 3 of them are the same model (Western Digital 3TB Green). Oddly, 2 out of those 3 are being detected as SSDs, which is a serious issue. Since the NAS thinks theyre SSDs, it refuses to create a RAID array using all 4 disks. It only allows grouping the ones it thinks are the same type (2 and 2), because mixing HDD and SSD in a RAID is understandably restricted. The real problem here is the NAS incorrectly identifying regular HDDs as SSDs.

I contacted support and, unfortunately, theyre too green. I sent a detailed explanation with screenshots and logs, but they asked me for a screenshot showing the message about not being able to mix disk types, completely missing the point. They either dont understand how RAID works, or theyre not acknowledging that detecting an HDD as an SSD is a fundamental flaw. It's not just about the label, since SSDs and HDDs behave differently in sector size, how data is written, wear leveling, and so on, and NAS systems treat them accordingly.

Hardware-wise, it's a solid device. The software is almost there. But support? So far, terrible. You cant have an entry-level support person handling tickets for mid-to-advanced hardware. It really shows they dont understand their own system.

Thats a deal-breaker for me. Imagine investing in 416TB drives, ready to configure RAID and backups, and then you hit this SSD/HDD misdetection issue. Youre stuck, unable to proceed, and forced into weeks of back-and-forth with entry-level support just to fix something that shouldnt have happened in the first place.

Original: I'm still amazed at how well this little thing performs, especially for the price. And I'm saying this as a Synology fan, with high-end units already running in my setup.

First off, the packaging was great, and honestly, the price doesnt make sense for everything you get out of the box.

It comes with a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port (not well documented, but the MAC address suggests it's an Intel chip). The processor is an RK3588C, and it includes 8 GB of RAM. It also has a GPU and a VPU, which is a dedicated chip for video encoding and decoding.

The software is lightning fast to browse, but it's still pretty new, and the app center is limited for now. Most of the available apps run via Docker, which makes sense considering it's an ARM-based system.

The photo app is really impressive. It has a kind of local AI that can recognize objects and animals, letting you search for photos like "dogs and mountains." It reminds me of what Synology offers in their Photo Station.

One downside is the lack of gallery or backup apps for Android or iOS (at least for now).

There's also a built-in theater app that works as a local media center, kind of like Plex or Jellyfin. However, it only runs locally in a browser. You cant use it directly on your TV or phone unless you access it through the browser. The good part is that this app uses the VPU for encoding and decoding, keeping CPU usage at 0%. So if you're playing media that your browser cant handle, or if you're lowering the quality due to bandwidth, it will re-encode on the fly with no CPU strain.

It has HDMI port, that will serve as sort of casting device. You will see a message to use their APP to play something. There is an app on android and ios market, that will connect to your NAS locally (no user or internet needed) and let you choose any video from the storage, and will play it over the HDMI output and using the VPU for transcoding if is needed.

Jellyfin is available in the app center, but it's the Docker version. It works fine, but I couldnt find a way to make it use the VPU or GPU. So when it re-encodes video, it hits the CPU hard.

Performance-wise, its really fast. I tested it with a 2TB WD Black drive, and it maxed out the disk speed when transferring over the 2.5 Gbps link. No bottlenecks at the SATA port.

It also has USB 3.2 ports in case you want to connect external drives. I believe it supports all RAID levels via software, but I'm not 100% sure, so definitely do your own research there.

I honestly wasnt expecting it to be this good, especially at a price thats about one-sixth of a Synology. Sure, you don't get things like built-in surveillance support or photo backup apps, but for local file sharing, it's amazing.

Synology only gives you 4 GB of RAM on their entry-level NAS units, and this one already comes with 8 GB.

The fan is super quiet. You could easily keep it on your desk. Just be aware that the noise level will depend on the drive you use, since some disks are loud when reading and writing.

Another nice touch is the external power supply. Its easy to replace if anything goes wrong.

The included Ethernet cable is just okay. It says Cat 6, but Id recommend using a better one, especially for NAS use.

Overall, I think this is an awesome solution for home use and even for small businesses looking for a reliable backup server.
